உழைப்பு என்ன தரும்? | கதை:

பூவரசங்காட்டில் பறவைகள் மட்டுமே வசித்துவந்தன. கழுகு அந்தக் காட்டுக்கு அரசனாக இருந்தது. செழிப்பாக இருந்த பூவரசங்காட்டில் கடந்த ஓர் ஆண்டாக மழையே இல்லை. மரம் செடி கொடிகளுக்குப் போதிய நீர் கிடைக்காததால் அவை வாட ஆரம்பித்தன. குளங்களிலும் ஆறுகளிலும் நீர் வற்றத் தொடங்கியது.

பறவைகள் அனைத்தும் கழுகிடம் வந்து தண்ணீர்ப் பஞ்சம் பற்றி முறையிட்டன. “அன்பர்களே, மழை பெய்வது நம் கையில் இல்லை. அதனால் தண்ணீர்த் தேவையை நாம் எப்படிப் பூர்த்தி செய்வது என்று சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றது கழுகு.

புத்திசாலி மைனா, “அரசே, நம் பூவரசங்காட்டில் வறட்சி நிலவுவது உண்மைதான். ஆனால், நம் காட்டை அடுத்துள்ள தும்பைக் காட்டில் காலம் தவறாமல் மழை பெய்கிறது. அங்குள்ள குளம், ஏரி, ஆறுகளில் தண்ணீர் நிரம்பி இருக்கிறது. தண்ணீர் கேட்டால் தருவார்கள்” என்றது.

“நம் காட்டிலிருந்து தினமும் தும்பைக் காட்டுக்குச் சென்று தண்ணீர் குடித்துவர முடியுமா? வேறு ஏதேனும் வழி இருக்கிறதா?” என்று கேட்டது கழுகு. “அரசே, தும்பைக் காட்டில் வற்றாத ஒரு பெரிய ஏரி இருக்கிறது. அது நம் பூவரசங்காட்டின் எல்லையில்தான் இருக்கிறது.

நாம் அந்த ஏரியிலிருந்து சிறிது தூரத்துக்குக் கால்வாய் வெட்டி, அந்த நீரை நம் காட்டிலுள்ள ஏரியில் நிரப்பிவிடலாம். ஆண்டு முழுவதும் நமக்கு நீர் கிடைக்கும். தும்பைக் காட்டு அரசரிடம் அனுமதி கேட்டுவிட்டேன்” என்று சொன்னது அமைச்சர் செம்போத்து பறவை.

“இது நல்ல யோசனை! நம் காட்டிலுள்ள பறவைகள் அனைத்தும் நாளையே இந்தப் பணியைத் தொடங்க வேண்டும்” என்று மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் கூறியது கழுகு அரசன். “அரசே, நாங்கள் இருவரும் பெரும்பாலும் நீரே அருந்த மாட்டோம். நாங்கள் எதற்காகக் கால்வாய் வெட்டும் பணிக்கு வர வேண்டும்?” என்கிற குரல் கேட்டுத் திரும்பியது கழுகு. அங்கே தேன்சிட்டுவும் காடைக்கோழியும் நின்றிருந்தன.

“கால்வாய் வெட்டுவதற்கு வர விருப்பமில்லை என்றால் வர வேண்டாம். உங்களுக்குச் சிறிய தோட்டத்தைத் தருகிறேன். தேன்சிட்டே, நீ பூக்களில் உள்ள தேனைக் குடித்துக்கொள். காடைக்கோழியே, நீ அங்குள்ள புழு, பூச்சிகளைத் தின்று கொள்” என்றது கழுகு. ‘ஆஹா, நாம் எந்த வேலையும் செய்யாமல் சொகுசாக வாழலாம்’ என்று நினைத்த தேன்சிட்டும் காடைக்கோழியும் மகிழ்ந்தன.

கழுகு தான் சொன்னது போலவே ஒரு சிறிய தோட்டத்தைக் காடைக்கோழிக்கும் தேன்சிட்டுக்கும் கொடுத்தது. தேன்சிட்டும் காடைக்கோழியும் அன்று முதல் அந்தத் தோட்டத்திற்குள் வசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தன. மற்ற பறவைகள் எல்லாம் கால்வாய் வெட்டும் பணியைத் தொடங்கின.

மிகச் சிறிய தூரம்தான் என்றாலும் பறவைகளுக்கு அது மிகப் பெரிய பணியாக இருந்தது. ஒரு மாதக் காலத்தில் பறவைகள் சேர்ந்து தும்பைக்காட்டு ஏரியிலிருந்து ஒரு கால்வாயை வெட்டி பூவரசங்காட்டிலுள்ள ஏரிக்கு நீரைக் கொண்டுவந்து சேர்த்தன. பூவரசங்காட்டில் தண்ணீர்ப் பற்றாக்குறை தீர்ந்தது.

கால்வாய் வெட்டி பூவரசங்காட்டுக்குத் தண்ணீரைக் கொண்டுவந்து சேர்த்த பறவைகளின் உழைப்பைப் பாராட்டி, அவற்றுக்குக் கழுகு அரசன் விருந்து கொடுத்தது. எல்லாப் பறவைகளும் விருந்து உண்டு கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அங்கே இளைத்த உடலுடன் தேன்சிட்டும் காடைக்கோழியும் வந்தன. அவற்றைக் கண்ட கழுகுக்கு அதிர்ச்சியாக இருந்தது.

“ஏன் இப்படி இருக்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டது கழுகு. “அரசே, நீங்கள் கொடுத்த தோட்டத்திலுள்ள செடிகொடி, மரங்கள் எல்லாம் நீர் இல்லாமல் காய்ந்துவிட்டன. அதனால் எனக்குத் தேன் கிடைக்வில்லை. நான் பல நாட்கள் உணவே உண்ணாமல் தவிக்கிறேன்” என்றது தேன்சிட்டு.

“அரசே, மண்ணும் வறண்டு போய்விட்டதால் புழு, பூச்சிகளும் எனக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை. நானும் பசியால் தவிக்கிறேன்” என்றது காடைக்கோழி. “அன்று நான் கால்வாய் வெட்டச் சொன்னபோது நாங்கள் தண்ணீரே குடிப்பதில்லை, அதனால் கால்வாய் வெட்ட மாட்டோம் என்றீர்கள். ஆனால், நீரின் தேவையை நீங்கள் உணர வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகத்தான் உங்களுக்குச் சிறிய தோட்டத்தைத் தந்தேன்.

அங்குள்ள செடிகள் தண்ணீரின்றி வாடிவிட்டன. புழு, பூச்சிகள் வளரக்கூட நீர் அவசியம். நம் காட்டில் எல்லாப் பறவைகளும் உழைக்கத் தயாராக இருக்கும்போது நீங்களும் உங்களால் இயன்ற அளவு உழைத்திருக்க வேண்டும். சரி, மற்ற பறவைகளோடு இணைந்து உழையுங்கள். இப்போது விருந்தில் கலந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றது கழுகு அரசன். தேன்சிட்டும் காடைக்கோழியும் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் சாப்பிடச் சென்றன.

The Eagle King and the Birds Who Learned the Value of Water:

In Poovarasam Forest, only birds lived. The eagle was the king of that forest. Once a flourishing place, Poovarasam Forest had not received rain for an entire year. Without enough water, the trees, plants, and vines began to wither. The ponds and rivers also started to dry up.

All the birds went to the eagle and complained about the water shortage.

“Dear ones, it is not in our hands to make rain fall. So tell me, how can we meet our need for water?” asked the eagle.

The wise myna said, “Your Majesty, it is true that drought prevails in Poovarasam Forest. But in the nearby Thumbai Forest, rain falls without fail. The lakes, ponds, and rivers there are full of water. If we ask, they will surely give us some.”

“Do you expect us to fly to Thumbai Forest every day just to drink water? Is there any other way?” asked the eagle.

The minister bird, Sembothu, said, “Your Majesty, there is a large lake in Thumbai Forest that never dries up. It lies close to the boundary of our Poovarasam Forest. If we dig a canal from that lake to our forest, we can fill our own lake with water. Then, throughout the year, we will have enough. I have already sought the permission of Thumbai Forest’s king.”

“This is an excellent idea! From tomorrow, all the birds of our forest shall begin this work,” said the eagle joyfully.

Just then, a voice spoke up:

“Your Majesty, we mostly don’t drink water directly. Why should we join in digging the canal?”

It was the hummingbird and the jungle fowl.

“If you don’t wish to join, then don’t. I will give you a small garden. Hummingbird, you may drink nectar from its flowers. Jungle fowl, you may eat the worms and insects there,” replied the eagle.

“Ah! We can live comfortably without doing any hard work,” thought both the hummingbird and the jungle fowl, and they were pleased.

The eagle gave them the little garden as promised, and they settled there. Meanwhile, all the other birds began digging the canal.

Though the distance was short, for the birds it was a huge task. After a month of hard effort, they finally dug a canal from the Thumbai Forest lake and brought water to Poovarasam Forest’s lake. The water shortage in Poovarasam Forest was solved.

In praise of the birds’ hard work, the eagle king hosted a grand feast. All the birds were happily eating when the hummingbird and jungle fowl arrived, weak and frail.

The eagle was shocked.

“Why do you look like this?” it asked.

The hummingbird replied, “Your Majesty, the plants and trees in the garden you gave me dried up without water. I could not find nectar. I have been starving for days.”

The jungle fowl said, “Your Majesty, the soil dried up, so worms and insects disappeared. I too have been starving.”

The eagle said, “When I first asked you to help dig the canal, you refused, saying you don’t drink water. That is why I gave you the garden—so that you would realize the importance of water. Without water, even flowers cannot bloom and insects cannot thrive. Every bird in this forest worked hard together. You too should have joined, doing whatever you could.

Now, go and join the others in their work. For today, sit and enjoy the feast with everyone.”

The hummingbird and the jungle fowl, happy and relieved, joined the other birds at the feast.
